Food Chain Partnerships in Latin America promote Sustainable Agriculture

Cooperation with PepsiCo spans across the continent

Consumers increasingly seek high-quality, safe products from responsible sources.
Based on a partnership with the multinational food company PepsiCo, Bayer CropScience trains the corporation’s potato suppliers in sustainable agriculture. “We have joined forces with PepsiCo to implement good agricultural practices among its potato suppliers. The success of Bayer CropScience’s Food Chain Partnerships in South America is based on the company’s commitment to sustainability along the entire production chain,” explains Franziska Bendisch, Manager for Sustainable Development and Food Chain Partnerships in Latin America.

The important partnership with PepsiCo was signed in July to increase the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices along the production chain of PepsiCo’s potato suppliers. During the first few weeks alone, the Food Chain Partnership program has already been implemented in Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador and Chile where farmer workshops on sustainability and safe product handling have already taken place.

Meet global certification standards

The partnership with Bayer CropScience will enable PepsiCo to enhance its sustainable performance.
“The partnership with Bayer CropScience will enable PepsiCo to enhance its sustainable performance. The Food Chain Partnership program will provide a major boost to expand the scope of projects we have developed in the region over the past 20 years,” says Jorge Tarasuk, PepsiCo's Vice-President of Operations for South America.

Now, the program will continue in Brazil, Peru and Venezuela. “Bayer CropScience developed customized trainings for PepsiCo’s farmers,” adds Bendisch. “The program also includes activities that will help to meet global certification standards for potato farming.”

The partnership aims to
  • empower and encourage farmers to invest in practices that ensure competitiveness and market differentiation,
  • provide farmers with tools designed for farm management, integrated potato crop management, traceability, storage and safe and proper use of crop protection products,
  • raise awareness among farmers for the importance of sustainable agriculture,
  • provide PepsiCo with agricultural crops meeting the demands of consumers who increasingly seek high-quality, safe products from responsible sources that respect the environment and society.
Now, the Food Chain Partnership program will continue in Brazil, Peru and Venezuela.
"In the frame of Food Chain Partnership program, PepsiCo and Bayer CropScience are working together for Sustainable Agriculture all over the world”, explained Christine Brunel-Ligneau, in charge of PepsiCo Key Relation Management for Bayer CropScience globally. “We have successful projects implemented in all Latin America but also in Europe and Asia. For example, in 2010, around 20.000 acres of high quality potatoes have been grown in India in partnership with PepsiCo".
